You don't need experience, a gi, or to be in shape first. You need comfortable clothes, a water bottle, and a signed waiver. Here's everything else.
Every student — adult or child — needs a completed waiver on file before stepping on the mats. It takes about two minutes online and includes an e-signature, so there's nothing to print. For minors, a parent or guardian signs. If you'd rather bring a paper copy, download the PDF and hand it in at the door.
Athletic shorts without pockets or zippers, and a fitted t-shirt or rash guard. No gi required for your first class — we'll tell you if the class you picked is gi.
A water bottle, a towel, and flip-flops or sandals for walking off the mat.
Jewelry, watches, and anything in your pockets. Trim fingernails and toenails before you come in.
Clean clothes, clean feet, no open cuts. Mats are cleaned between sessions and we ask the same care from everyone.
Come in 15 minutes early. Coach Chris will meet you, check your waiver, and show you the changing rooms.
Class starts with movement drills. Go at your pace — nobody expects you to keep up on day one.
The coach teaches a position and a technique, then you drill it with a partner who already knows it.
Live rolling is optional your first day. If you do roll, you'll be paired with an experienced training partner who controls the pace.
After class we'll go over the schedule and tuition options. No pressure, no contracts sprung on you.
All times are Beckley local time (Eastern). Any class works for a first visit — if you're unsure, call and we'll point you to the best one.
Call the academy to arrange a trial class, or send a message with your questions and we'll answer. Arte Suave Jiu Jitsu Academy is at 321 South Fayette Street in Beckley, with free parking on site.
